Abstract

Anti-ganglioside antibody is the well-known cause for Guillain-Barre syndrome, which is the autoimmune disease characterized by limb weakness and areflexia. Since some lipopolysaccarides of Campylobacter jejuni have ganglioside-like epitopes, the autoimmune antibodies attack the peripheral and maybe, central nervous system. Miller Fisher syndrome characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia is the most common variant form of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Anti-GQ1b antibody is specific to this syndrome, especially, ophthalmoplegia, because GQ1b is located on the perinodal area of the ocular motor nerves. Variable epitopes from the complex form of anti-ganglioside antibodies can induce the broad clinical spectrum of anti-GQ1b syndrome.
